So its official that I have been away WAAAY too long! I apologize for the three confirmed people who still check back and follow...You guys are the best for keeping the faith! I have been super busy in the many facets that life has for us but for now I'll keep it about the hair...
So, it was been June 14 since I initially started my braids that took 2 days. Here are some quick facts since I been away.

There was a period of time between Dec 08- Feb 09 that lint (unbeknowngst to me at the time) from sweaters got into some of them in the back.

I tirelessly picked out what I could see and then I had help from 2nd party....(I just love him so much)!

I love rollersets!

They have gotten a bit fuzzy/ frizzy at which for the first time a month ago, I trimmed the hair with scissors loc by loc. (Just in the front) Could have done better but oh well, I'm okay with it.

I have gotten many compliments....and people who don't get it, wont get ever get it and continuously question although they were told a million times..."When are you going to take those things down?"

For clarifying, I use dish soap...IT IS WONDERFUL! NO PROBLEMS WITH IT AT ALL!

I LOVE them and only REGRET not getting them SOONER!!!!

Half Updates Never Count

So I see that my last real post was a while ago. It was five days before my two month-versary. Now ladies and gentlemen I have officially reached my 5 month mark this past November 14th! I am so excited! I have had MAJOR compliments on my hair styling versality and the ease of just waking up in the morning gives me the happiest feeling in the world! My only, only regret is truly NOT DOING THIS SOONER!!!!I can't stress that enough.
Since then however I have picked up some hobbies. Well more like resurrected some hobbies. One of them is crocheting. I started to crochet in '05 but life just had me put the hook down and not only am I picking them back up again but I'm happy to say that this beginner crocheter has made a sweater, two pairs of house slippers, two winter hats, three scarfs and a pot holder. What is even extra cool is that I have some requests! I tell people that I thank them for their support and while as a beginner I don't profess to know everything, but their support allows me to perfect my skills in making their project.
Also, I've decided it was time for me to finish my B.A. in Social Work. I had two attempts at online schools that in my opinion were found not to be repudable after being enrolled. They were accredited but in choosing schools that is not the only important thing to look for. So after the two attempts I have finally enrolled in an University that has long history of excellence. So I attend two nights a week and I can't wait until I'm done. I'm returning back to my nerd-dom( as if it ever left) and I have A's in BOTH my classes. GO EYEDINITY!
Last but not least I have gotten back into my writing. I LOVE IT!!!

So why is this post entitled, "Half Updates Never Count"? It's because one of the most important things needed to make a cool and complete blog I happen to be missing. I AM MISSING THE PICTURES!I have pictures not only of my completed crochet projects but I have pictures of my hair. I have lost my USB cord so that's the hold up. When I find it I'll be at it again. Until then, Hold Tight, BE Right and be Natural!

I can not keep my hands out of my hair. I'm worried that because I do it so much, my hair will fall out...Ok, I'm not really worried but I adore my hair so much that my hands and my hair are very well accquainted. I LOVE MY HAIR! IT'S BEAUTIFUL!!!YEA!!!!

Ok now that that is out of my system, I must relate something that I've been hearing. It is this..."Locs when maintained by a latch hook will break the hair." I would like to ask anyone who has maintained their locs with a latch hook, to please let me know if this is true. I've tried to figure out HOW this can happen but I'm not seeing it. Even with the part of the latch hook that folds or closes over, I see how it can break your hair off if you use it harsly or improperly but can't any tool do some damage if used harshly?

So Eyedinity what should it have been? Sisterlock tool, Nappyloc tool, Hair Pin, Copper Wire/Blind Needle Self made tool, latch hook or fingers?

These are a few pics of my braidlocks that will be a month old on the 18th of July. You'll see that I've roller set them and just last night I've washed them for the second time. I use Jamaican Mango and Lime Loc Tingling Shampoo and Loc Conditioner. I love the tingling sensation and I love the smell of the conditioner. I know some say you shouldn't condition so if there's anyone that has experience with braidlocks who had an unpleasant condition when they conditioned, please let me know. I am going to try and make this a simple reading.

1)Felt like I settled with my 1st set of locks because there were bumps and holes in them when they were completed and they were bigger than I liked.

2)I ALWAYS WANTED SISTERLOCKS!!!

3)I called myself correcting them by making one loc into 2 or 3 but the parts became very uneven and all over the place.

4)I ALWAYS WANTED SISTERLOCKS!

5)I began to take them down May 3rd.

6)DID I SAY I ALWAYS WANTED SISTERLOCKS?

7)I spoke to a consultant for the millionth time and I made a decision to choose L. Williams.

8) I GOTTA HAVE SISTERLOCKS!

9) Will someone tell me why once again for the zillionth time a financial situation came up prolonging my installation until perhaps Oct/Nov when my plans were for July?

10) NOT Looking too Good for those SISTERLOCKS :(

11) But I INTENSELY desire locs, having Locks are more important to me than a specific type or brand so this time I've made an appointment for:

BRAIDLOCS!!!!!

I've read about TRA's microbraidlocs and viewed the photos of lioness. Lioness' daughter Shell has braidlocs and they helped me make my decision.

Can anyone guess now what I'm up to?

So I grabbed my trusty ole latchook tool, which is the exact same tool I used the last 3 years to latch weave into my hair to retouch my baby locs. I promised DT since he said my hair was beautiful, not to convert any more locks. But I broke that promise when I saw about 4 more that were a bit on the huge side for me. He understood totally.

I sat on the couch, popped in about three movies, one of which was Charlotte's Web and made me cry, and just completed my first retouch! Yea to me! I'm tired and sleepy but I thought I'd go ahead and post pics.

I'll try not to make this too long. Ok, here goes...

Part One: I'm officially crazy

So my locks were installed on Jan. 12 and 13 by a beautifullly spirited, licensed cosmetologist and loctitian. I felt like I was driving her crazy because before she began I asked her to make them larger than what I previously asked for. Then I retracked my statement as if I was in an indecisive state of mind. And I was and I felt so bad because I didn't want to inconvience her with my craziness. However, we decided that they would be small as we originally planned. And as pretty as I feel they were, when I got home for some reason I was cringing at the sight of locks that seemed too big against my cheeks. Yeah, I know I'm crazy. Here is when I think I went crazy. I tried to live with it but I couldn't. So....

I went on You Tube (I would post the video but it was removed) and on someone's site, (I'm scared to mention her name because I don't want any trouble) and learned how to retighten locks. Now I thought that if I could retighten them then I could certainly create them from scratch, right? So I got a piece of kinky twist weave I already had and practiced and after an hour, I had created four tool assisted locks. I used the latch hook I had for years from installing 'crochets' or the 'latch hook' styles. Then one by one, wherever I saw a huge lock, I took it down and put two or three in it's place. But the madness began because I couldn't stop myself. This went on for two weeks until I ended up making 139 locks turn into 272 locks. And even still, because I'm crazy I think that I see others that can be converted but DT(my husband's intitials) told me that I was obsessing and to stop. So today we went to a spiritual gathering and he said my hair is so beautiful and to stop converting locks. So I think I will. Here are some pics of my style. I am very satisified!!!!I hope my loctitian doesn't kill me... I still love her, it's just me, I'm crazy! Any thoughts?

Part Two Titled, "You're NEVER taking them out!!!"

So, I have got lots of compliments on how pretty they are. (And I so humbly say,"Thank You.") However while recieving the compliments these are the top 5 things I contend with when recieving most of these complements.

5) Piercing Stares at my hair as if I had three eyes and a potato growing out of my head.

4) Hands that pull my hair from people who have not recieved permission to do so.

3) A shrill outcry in agony as to why I would do this to myself when I already had "pretty thick hair."

2) A firm conviction that I have extentions.

And most of all...

1) They say, "Oh no, how are you going to take it out!"

Now I love natural hair so much that I could talk about it for hours. And I love sharing tidbits of info with others who show sincere intrest. However, when people seem to be antagonistic, I tend not to show such a happy face.

For example, when I went natural I would get asked by close friends on how I got my hair to be so thick and full and "pretty". They said they wanted it for themselves. Now these were full fledged permies and just as I myself once was, I knew these ladies were not willing to do what it takes to get there. So I told them what I did. "What!, they would lament, "You mean not get a perm!, I couldn't do that, I need my perm." And I would smile knowing that I once shared the same sentiment and said, "Okay."

I used to suffer badly from hair that fell out, broke off and then was covered with a weave. But I refused to believe that that was what was intended for me. So yes, I sacrificed what was considered the norm of getting a perm and went the dreaded "nappy." I was talked about and even had my elders plead with me, "Please let me perm your hair, a kiddie perm wont hurt!" But I stood my nappy ground and in a few years it was full and free of the drama. It's like some ladies want the health of hair but are not willing to go against the "grain of the perm". One day I hope, One day...

And today an 82 year old woman called her hair, "horrible","nappy", "nasty" and said she hated it. I honestly wanted to cry because I sincerely told her that there is nothing horrible and nasty about what God created. What have we been taught? I'm scared and sad. Generations lost thinking they must cover their glory with a perm.

How do you deal with anticipation?

I will be locked in exactly 7 days. The suspention is mounting. How do you deal with anticipation? Do you write, take a walk in the park or jump up and down on your sofa? Well, I can't do anything but smile and wear my favorite hat. I feel like a kid again.

But also, I went to the beauty supply store to pick up some of my loc necessities. One is a satin pillow case and the other is a satin scarf. Now I just need a microfiber towel. I'm on my way!

Gettin' Rid of My WEAVES

So of course as I approach ten more day until my locks are installed, I come across things that I will no longer use. Feast your eyes on the contents of my weave bag. Oh yes, my heavy duty weave bag full of latch hook braids, tracks, kinky twist hair and microbraid hair. Unused and untouched, should I ask someone if they would like to buy them? Ha!

Shampoo

So early this morning I washed my hair and was trying to figure out what to do with it. I knew it was one of my last times shampooing loose hair given the fact that either my loctitian will wash it when I arrive on the 12th or I would do it the night before. I don't know yet. I wanted to do my last two strand twist style but as usual, I got frustrated with the tangles that I just braided it in six plaits, put my shea butter on and called it a morning. I even took a picture of me using a comb and my just washed loose hair.

Then I thought that sometimes, it's 'nothing to it but to do it' so I stop being so sentimental and just braided it up and put my hat on.

I will be locked in 11 days.

My date for lock installation is January 12th begining at 6 a.m. And when I met my 13year experienced loctian I concluded that she was the WARMEST person I've met in years. I am going to enjoy this relationship.

My husband and I met her and her husband and I tell you the smiles, conversation and the overall warm and inviting atmosphere was an ongoing enjoyable experience. We even talked about personal interests and future goals. Who knew that hair could bring people together?

I'll be checking in to relate my emotional state of being as my days of combing and having loose hair will come to their end.

Thinking out Loud

I'm gonna just think out loud for a moment...

Am I ruining my life trying to come up with money for a certain type of locking method? Have I been fooling myself into thinking that it's practical for my circumstances to invest in SLs looking beyond the fact that I can't get over their beauty. As much as I'm in complete love with this seemingly world renowned method, financially it may not be for me. So instead of kick and scream myself all the way past a gorgeous head of traditional locks, I'll happily go for what seems manageable for me. I've made my decision, small traditional locks it is. Wow, that feels good.

I got an appointment tomorrow with a licensed loctian for traditional locks so lets see what comes of our meeting.

See what happens when instead of flying through life missing the good stuff you take a moment to make conscious pratical decisions? That feels really, really good.

The Hairstyle that almost killed me!

It was again the high strung voice she heard on the other end of the phone. The voice that went on about a painful, emotional drift made up of years buying and bagging weaves belonged to her friend who felt she was at the end of her rope. She wanted to console her friend but realized that the only consolation would come in the form of about 9; one-hundred dollar bills to purchase the hairstyle that would be the end of all hairstyles. Nine hundred dollars would set her friend free of the weaves, free of the "can you help me take my micros out" and free of the madness she has expressed ever so frequently. A long way from nine hundred dollars, she said to her friend so seemed to be losing it, "Hey, I know this girl who does latchhook braids. Maybe you call her for an appointment."

A sigh of relief came from the other end as her friend replied, "Really?" And from then an appointment was made and all was well for her friend who needed a quick fix remedy. Lastly the consoling friend says, "Just call me when you're done, 'cause I wanna see it." Little did she know that "seeing it" one week later would carry so much heartache.

"I can't move my shoulders and I feel like I've had surgery on my mouth." She said to her friend as a new recipent of the tightest hairstyle. She was sitting on her couch with her shoulders held up with her mouth open so afraid she would flex a muscle on her face or scalp. "Its not really that tight is it?", the friend asked already knowing the answer from the way her friend's eyes were squinted. "Yeah." She said like a dog whimpering from fight wounds. Feeling guitly for referring her friend to this lady who apparently hasn't the slightest idea as to what she is doing she says, "Well, try to go to sleep and when you wake up it'll be a bit loose."

She watched as her friend slowly moved trying to rest her head on a pillow she grabbed for her. She tried one way, then another and yet another way, but there was no way she could lay her head down without moaning. "I asked if she could ease up but she wouldn't. She even said that one of her past clients were all on the floor from the tightness and said she wouldn't come again." The friend was shocked to hear this and then took a look in her friend's hair and discovered her rippled scalp, red and swollen from the pulling. "Girl, I hate to tell you this but if you keep this, you're gonna have bad bumps all over."

That night the friend in pain managed to sleep on her face, which of course was swollen in the morning. Still with unbearable discomfort the next day the friend took a bottle of conditioner and a pair of scissors and 4 hours later her tight hairstyle that almost killed her was gone. She figured that for $75 dollars she had better take some pictures of what she would never do again. So she smiled and flashed away.

Twists, Afto Puffs, Wigs and Interlocks?

Can't remember where I left off in my last post since I'm posting from my email account. I believe I was ranting and raving because it's taking me too much time to come up with the money for my locks as well as the frustration I had with coming up with some styles for my hair.

I am in love with natural hair but once again, I must say that I'm tired of getting twists, twist outs and afro puffs. My issue with twists is that it seems the only shops that do them are shops that are so high profiled and sididdy (spelling?) that I cringe at the thought of sitting in a place that attracts clients who complain about their BMW's detailing taking too long. So then I rely on my afro puff which has two down sides. 1) I can't wear them for so long because my edges start to break and 2) My afro is too big to fit a hat over so I can't wear it in the winter.

So now that its winter I'm looking for a style. My hair is slowly reverting back to it's kinky curls after being straightened two months ago. I advise anyone who wants to do that last big straightening for old times sake to just rely on past photos because it's not worth crying when you find that your hair doesn't revert back until months later...

So I bought the wig because I was supposed to get kinky twists but the girl stood me up. Then that got hot and itchy to wear. Then I wore a braid out but then that got tired after two days of smashing a hat on it. Then lastly I went to this girl who does crochets, latchhooks, interlocks, whatever people call them and I tell you. MY HAIR WAS TOO TIGHT!!! You know what? It was so tight that this subject needs a subheading of it's own which I will create now. Oh yeah, it was ridiculous! Insane! Obnoxious! Made me wanna holla! A crazed system...

So by now I want sisterlocks more than I ever did. I have officially checked myself into two clinics/rehabs. One is, readtoomanyblogsitis and cantwaittogetlockeditis. Both have accepted me and welcomed me with open arms and I've confessed the following to them: 1)I've spoken with 2 Consultants and 4 trainees to narrow down whom I will choose. The final decision has been killing me to make. Therefore I created a system. Here it is...(don't laugh, it'll only send me into denial)

The crazed system

Each consultant/trainee gets points based on their characteristics. One point is the lowest 5 is the highest. The consultant/trainee who gets the highest total points is the one whom I will likely choose as mine. Here are the catagories: Experience, Location (in relation to my home),Overall Comfort as in how I connected with them and Retighening Price.

We laughed, talked and connected but when I asked her a question about a troubleshooting issue she didn't answer it as well as C.N.M. But if I went to C.N.M I wouln't have as pleasurable of a time sitting under them.
It is important for client and consultant to connect but do I go for experience over comfort or comfort over experience? And of course I end with my favorite line, "What's a girl to do?"

So as I said last time, I was supposed to be getting some kinky twists this Saturday. Well, I purchased the hair and I went to the girl's house and guess what? She stood me up! There I was standing in the snow/rain on her doorsteps when a young lady who for all know could have been her said that my "stylist" wasn't home. It should have meant something to me when I called three times to confirm my appointment and she didn't answer.

So there I was on a Saturday night with a head full of hair that was in dire need of combing/styling. I could go to a shop but not that many people take walk-ins especially a walk-in who will need kinky twists. I've had them professionally done before once with extensions and one time without. So I went home and went through my weave bag. (Yes I have one, don't laugh) I was trying to see what I could whip up in short notice since I had somewhere to be Sunday morning.

Now I must say that I would have just put it in an afro puff ponytail as I usually do but since it's SOOOO cold outside, I wouldn't be able to fit any hats over it. So I was sad about the girl standing me up but excited to do my hair. I went to YouTube and found a video on kinky twists. I tried it but to no avail. Then I tried braiding, but again no avail. By this time I had twisted, braided re-twisted, re-braided my hair only frustrating myself cause I couldn't get it right. By then it was 2 am! I was so far gone and my nerves were shot with nothing to do to my hair. So, I went to bed unhappy, irritated and more in want of my anticipated locks. I said to myself, "Now if I had my locs, I wouldn't be having this issue now."

So I missed Sunday's date and was even more depressed. Then I french braided my hair so that I could do a latch hook style. Now while I was braiding it, I got even more sadder ( I guess you say how sad can you get) because I just recently had my hair pressed at a local salon and I'll say I got LOTS of compliments. But I guess from the excess heat from the dryer, flat irons and curlers when I washed my hair, some of it REMAINED STRAIGHT AS IF I HAD A PERM!!!!!! I was and still is HORRIFIED. The pressing of my hair was only supposed to be a temporary thing that I had done ( the last time my hair was pressed was 2 years ago) so that I could take pictures since it'll be one of my last times with pressed hair before I lock. But now, with the scare that my hair is permanently straight, it will NEVER be straightened again!

So now that the threat of permanently straightened hair may be an issue now I fear that I can't get my locs as soon as I wish. What have I done! Just for the heck of, "One more time for old times sake" I could have jeprodized my curly kinks for a stupid temporary fling! I am seriously, seriously having a horrrible time here. What's a girl to do!

I tell you all now as some will laugh some will point their fingers and others will take pity I will share this last bit of the crazy hair saga...I bought a wig. Yes, you read it correctly, I purchased a wig. Unsure of what and how to do my hair for the winter and when it could be done, I bought a wig to hold me over until my next style attempt. I believe it'll be braids. Just some regular braids because since I'm saving for my locs, I'm trying to put away money. So I'm wiggin' it up.

Now, with my hair corn rowed and wig-ready, I will brave the world with my 29.99, bobbed cut tresses. Oh no I'm not ashamed, I'm just ready to be LOCKED already! Because all this nonsense, buying weave, wigs, straightening, twisting then taking it down, braiding then taking it down , detangling every week HAS GOT TO GO! Can y'all fell me on this?

Ok that was more than enough. It's out of my system now.

Am I wishy washy?

Hi there all! It's really cold here and as usual I'm thinking of ways to "put my hair away" so it doesn't have to be so exposed to the harsh weather. So, I've decided to get some kinky twists by this young lady I was referred to. It was told to me that she does a wonderful job such as what we expect from our Authentic African Braiding Shops but for much less. I paid 250 dollars for kinky twists and she's charging me 85. Not bad, huh? And course all this means nothing because I haven't even started to post pictures. I guess the proof is in the pictures. Well, as young as I am I need to get more aquainted with this tech stuff. I will be posting pictures as soon as I get my hands on a tutorial.

As far as being locked...I'm really looking forward to it but now, I'm wondering if I should go a more cost effective way. It's like one minute I think that SLs are the way to go because the look of them are so unique to me but on the other hand I wonder if I should get something cheaper since it MAY look similiar for hundreds less. Am I wishy washy? Yes and a bit crazy. But of course I'm still in the process of narrowing it down. And of course at the end of day, I feel like I'm leaning towards SLs. Oh dear! What's a girl to do!

I got some pretty interesting thoughts after reading some negative reports and opinions regarding SLs. Here are my thoughts on them. People who've been SLd for some time know these things already, but if you're new to this like me, it's fresh news.

I heard some regarded them as being snobbish because of their high price. Some people are saying that others are hung up on the brand name, "sisterlocks" kinda how some may be hung up on Gucci, Prada, Vera Wang, etc. Therefore, these people would down other latch hook locking techniques that achieve a similiar look since the other techniques don't cost as much. It's almost like having SLs are a status symbol such as, the "high class" wear SLs and others "beneath" them wear the "lesser" types of locks only because they can't afford them. I never knew some people felt this way and placing myself as a candidate for SLs, this will obviously peek my interest. As down to earth as I am, being a person that dismissed an upscale salon in Chicago because of their snobbish ways, "Do I want to be associated with SLs?" But I read more...

Also, from what I understood from reading the 44 page court document from the legal case of Nappylocks vs Sisterlocks stated that a ceast and desist letter was sent to Ms. Edmonds because Dr. Cornwell wanted her not to practice her "Twisty Locs" believing that she took some methods from SL's over into her TL business. So when Ms. Edmonds didn't comply to this letter, it was copied to the legal counsel at Georgia International Convention Ctr. where Ms. Edmonds was to teach a TL class for the World Beauty Show but because of this letter, her class was cancelled. Then Dr. Cornwell distributed a "buyer beware" flier stating that TLs are a "...fraud", and "bootleg", causing Ms. Edmonds to loose business tarnishing her reputation. But what strikes me is the that in this court document it also states that Dr. Cornwell did all of this to Ms. Edmonds WITHOUT even seeing the TLs first! Isn't that sad! Because I'm only paraphrasing don't take this is an accurate account, I encourage any interested ones to read it for themselves. Just follow the links after this blog.

Also this comes from Ms. Belton of Nappylocs from her website... "They(Twistylocs) along with myself (and others) were threatened with letters, visits by strange people, obnoxious phone calls. It became so ridiculous I had to stop my kids from answering the biz phone, so they would not be exposed to the venom on the other end! Are we THAT hair obsessed!

The sadness!

Other negative things I read was that there are horror stories as to certified consultants listed on the website doing horrible jobs, making parts too big and not uniformed, not listening to the clients, forcing the toolin the hair and some clients have even taken down their locks because of it! I even read that some have tried to contact the home office about this but was unsuccessful. I'm saving up to get SLs so I can't imagine getting them and taking them down. I need the look I desire on the first try. I have thick hair and it's 9 inches long! That's about 900 dollars, right? So it HAS to be right the first time. But as with anything, there are pros and cons. Does this mean that the whole SL culture is wrong and horrible and full of snobbish,controlling, sue happy women? Far from it!

All I can say to people that are contemplating sisterlocks and have come across this negative information is this: We all have to make well informed decisions. If the negative things you've heard outweigh the positive then go with your gut instinct because this IS an investment. You are the one that has to pay for and wear your hair so be happy with whatever decsion you make. As for me, I have already established a comfortable rapport with my future consultant and will have talk with her regarding these issues and ask her honest opinion.

So in conclustion, the negative things I heard does indeed make me sad but for me it doesn't cancel out SLs as a whole. I still plan to get them and for those that contemplate getting them all I say again is do your homework. While we do that we must thank and give credit to the wonderful people who blog and help make this decision easier to make. They are extremely helpful.

A consequence of Trust?

Someone I know was just informed by the result of a bounced mortage payment that a trusted person over the couse of four weeks has stolen their family's life savings. Thousands of dollars are unaccounted for and this family of four finds themselves in a bind to scrape to find solace and emergency financial means to support their means of life. The person who did this was so trusted that they had keys to their house, access to any and all personal information as well as the former authority to care for their precious daughters. It was learned that while this person was perfoming idenity theft enjoying shopping sprees, the children were left unattended for hours in the vehicle. This information came to light today and the sad part about it was that the police and there was nothing they can do. As I consoled my friend I said that I strongly disagree, I know for a fact that identity theft is a crime punishable by law.

Is there anyone out there who has any advice? I would surely welcome it. Thanks.
