Tony Dungy: Time for Tom Coughlin to step down

As miserable as the Giants season has been, nothing could have prepared them for the downright embarrassing loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday.

And while the finger-pointing has been directed at everyone and from everywhere — now it is even coming from where you'd least expect.

Tony Dungy said on NBC's "Football Night in America" that head coach Tom Coughlin shouldn't be fired, but needed to step down. 

The 3-and-9 Giants have dropped seven straight and seem destined to finish with their worst record since Coughlin's first season with the team.

Dungy was blunt with co-host Dan Patrick in this exchange:

Patrick: "Time to start over in New York?"

Dungy: "It really is."

Patrick: "Where do you start when you start over?"

Dungy: "I think that you start with the coach, and Tom Coughlin should not be fired. You don't fire coaches that have won two Super Bowls, but he should step down. This is going to be a long-term rebuilding process."

When the pro-coach Dungy comes out and says what he did on Sunday night, you might have to admit the Coughlin Era is over.

And while it's still nearly impossible to find someone in the organization wanting to release an experienced coach who brings two Super Bowl rings to the table, even co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch — who don’t want to fire him — might have no other option.

A week after Odell Beckham Jr. broke the Internet by making one of the greatest catches in NFL history, the New York Giants wideout already has a special pair of gloves to commemorate the play.

It didn't take Nike long to create a pair of customized gloves for the receiver that features an image of Beckham's one-handed catch and the phrase "Be-ckham Legendary."

Just a few days after Beckham’s one-handed catch broke the Internet, the Giants’ rookie wide receiver put on an incredible display of some other skills at Friday’s practice.

After joining quarterbacks Eli Manning and Ryan Nassib in a fun game of throwing the ball into a netted bag, Beckham spun a ball while standing, then kicked the spinning ball for a 31-yard field goal.

It took two attempts but when was the last time you saw something like that?

Brent Grimes says his one-handed INT was better than Beckham Jr.'s catch (VIDEO)

New York Giants rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr.'s incredible one-handed catch Sunday night is being called the greatest catch of all time but, at least one NFL player is claiming he made a better grab just two weeks before.

That's right. Dolphins cornerback Brent Grimes thinks his similar leaping interception robbing the Lions' Calvin Johnson of a touchdown during Week 10 deserves as much consideration as Beckham's widely publicized play — and maybe more.

"It was a cool catch. I may be biased, I think mine was better," Grimes joked, via ESPN’s James Walker. "I jumped and everything. I was on defense. They weren't throwing me the ball. That was a great catch, though."

Let's make it simple and separate Big Apples from Orange Bowls by calling it like it is: Best Catch and Best Interception — respectively.

Settled.

Beckham Jr.'s 'Fingertip' catch can't top Tyree's 'Helmet' catch

While Odell Beckham Jr.'s  one-handed, super-stretch touchdown grab against the rival Cowboys on Sunday night was a remarkable feat, it started a debate Giants fans will be having over at the office cooler for days to come.

Was it the greatest catch in NFL history, as it's being called, or even in the Giants own glorious past?

For the argument, one only has to look back at David Tyree's "helmet catch" against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII to draw a comparison.

Beckham's three-fingered grab may well be — athletically — the best NFL catch ever, but what did it accomplish?

Nothing, if you know it was meaningless regular season game that the Giants — realistically out of playoff contention — ended up losing and were basically playing for pride against a division rival.

Considering the scenario surrounding Tyree's "helmet catch," which was almost Shakespearean, the desperation third-down catch helped put the kibosh on the undefeated Patriots' season and help the unheralded Giants win Super Bowl XLII with 59 seconds on the clock.

Eli Manning — who deserves a little credit on the play too — would go on to hit Plaxico Burress for the winning TD four plays later in what has been called the best Super Bowl game ever.



So while the only thing each catch has in common is the quarterback Manning, the overall edge definitely goes to Tyree.

But it's still too early to even call the rookie Beckham's catch the finest of his career. He still has a long way to go.

If you didn't see Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. make what is being called one of the greatest catches of all time on dozens of replays Sunday night, you're sure to see it all over ESPN along with the tweets and numerous memes making the rounds on the Internet Monday morning.

Some might say that the only thing that could have possibly made the rookie's acrobatic, one-handed grab of Eli Manning's wayward throw any better would be if The Odell  — as the catch is being called — helped lead to a Giants win.

That's correct. Not only did Beckham make a one-handed catch while falling backwards with a defender in the way, but he snagged the football with only three fingers.

Tim Tebow, Michael Strahan get spots on People's Sexiest Man Alive list: Report

Actor Chris Hemsworth may head the list for People's 2014 Sexiest Man Alive issue but that didn't stop a couple of athletes turned analysts from making the cut.

Ubiquitous television personality and former Giants football star Michael Strahan made the list along with the sexy Thor star. But it was the inclusion of former Jets backup quarterback Tim Tebow — currently toiling as an SEC Network talking head — that could be considered a bit of a surprise.

Hemsworth, who plays the Marvel hero with the flowing locks and enormous hammer, won the cover spot (he was a runner-up in 2012) but shrugged off the accolade. 

"I can just say to Elsa, 'Now remember, this is what the people think, so I don't need to do the dishes anymore, I don't need to change nappies. I'm above that. I've made it now.'"

Like Hemsworth, Tebow poo-pooed the honor.

"I don't go through life trying to be sexy; I go through life trying to help others," he says. "It sort of hits me out of the blue when I find out that anyone finds me attractive. I mean, it's a great compliment, but I'm just trying to do the right things and live my life in the right way. I want to be noticed for the right reasons."

One thing you can be sure about: Kelly Ripa is thrilled out of her gourd for Strahan's selection and she'll be yammering about her gap-toothed co-host all week.

The celebrity list also includes "Guardians of the Galaxy" star Chris Pratt; Jamie Dornan of the upcoming "Fifty Shades of Grey" adaptation; Ki Hong Lee, who stars in the young adult apocalyptic thriller "Maze Runner"; country star and "The Voice" mentor Blake Shelton (last year's winner was fellow coach Adam Levine); Oscar-nominated actor Bradley Cooper, the 2011 "Sexiest Man Alive"; "White Collar" star Matt Bomer; Eddie Redmayne of the Oscar-buzz biopic "The Theory of Everything"; and Scott Foley, turning up the heat on "Scandal."

What does it all mean?  Well, Nick Nolte was once voted PMSMA.

DEA Agents surprise NFL teams with drug checks after Sunday games: Report

Federal drug enforcement agents showed up unannounced Sunday to check at least three visiting NFL teams' medical staffs as part of an investigation into former players' claims that teams mishandled prescription drugs, according to the Washington Post.

The San Francisco 49ers' staff was checked at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, after they played the New York Giants. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' staff was checked at Baltimore-Washington International airport after playing the Redskins, reported the Post.

 The Seattle Seahawks, who played at Kansas City, confirmed via the team's Twitter account that they were spot-checked as well.

There were no arrests during the spot checks, said Drug Enforcement Administration spokesman, Rusty Payne, after the inspections. 

"DEA agents are currently interviewing NFL team doctors in several locations as part of an ongoing investigation into potential violations of the (Controlled Substances Act)," Payne said.

The nationwide probe is being directed by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York — where the NFL is headquartered — but involves several U.S. attorney's offices.

The investigation was sparked by a lawsuit filed in May on behalf of former NFL players going back to 1968. The number of plaintiffs has grown to more than 1,200, including dozens who played as recently as 2012. Any violations of federal drug laws from 2009 forward could also become the subject of a criminal investigation because they would not be subject to the five-year statute of limitations.

The operation was still ongoing, and other teams may be checked later.

The Seattle Seahawks mascots found themselves in a couple of of public relations conundrums before Sunday's game against the Giants.

First, Taima the hawk got real cozy with a fan's shoulder.

But just when you thought things couldn't get more embarrassing, the human mascot, Blitz the Seahawk, goes and hits on a Seattle player's girlfriend — and it looks like he really is enjoying his selfie.

The tweet is from Seahawks punter Jon Ryan, and he makes no bones about how he feels about the feathered dude's PDA:
